Nykieria Chaney is an interdisciplinary American playwright, director, and editorial photojournalist whose work interrogates cultural memory, representation, and the preservation of historical narrative across multiple media. Her practice exists at the intersection of performance studies, visual culture, and public humanities, with a sustained focus on documenting and reframing Black presence in American artistic and civic life.
As a playwright and director, Chaney’s theatrical work engages historical subjects and political memory through contemporary staging. Her production "The Chairman" examines the life and legacy of Chairman Fred Hampton within the broader framework of American civil rights movements and state power. Her dramaturgy is grounded in archival inquiry, narrative reconstruction, and embodied performance, positioning theater as a site of cultural transmission rather than entertainment.
Beyond the stage, Chaney is the creator and host of Black Art Is Lit, a literary podcast dedicated to amplifying the work of Black authors. Through curated readings, contextual commentary, and engagement with African American literary traditions, the podcast serves as both a pedagogical space and a public humanities platform. By highlighting first chapters and narrative entry points, Chaney supports literacy advocacy while reinforcing the centrality of Black voices in contemporary literary discourse.
Chaney’s visual practice as a Getty Images editorial photographer extends her commitment to documentation. Her photography centers on live performance, cultural gatherings, and public moments, emphasizing nuance, atmosphere, and context. Within the tradition of documentary photography and photojournalism, her images contribute to the visual archive of Black artistic expression, serving as records of cultural production in real time. This practice reflects an intervention into historical patterns of representation in which African Americans have often been framed through reductive or imposed narratives.
Across mediums, Chaney’s work is informed by questions central to visual studies and media theory: Who is authorized to document? Who controls the frame? How do images and narratives shape collective memory? Her practice asserts that storytelling, whether through stage, sound, or image, is both an artistic undertaking and an ethical responsibility.
Based in Georgia, Chaney develops projects that bridge performance, documentation, and community engagement. Her interdisciplinary approach reflects a commitment to widening narrative frameworks, preserving cultural complexity, and producing work that serves as both art and record.
