The Law

1991 saw one Rodney Glen King III beaten within inches of his life by the Los Angeles Police Department Captured on video by George Holiday and passed on to KTLA were the beating would make history February 4, 1999 one Amadou Diallo died in a hail of 41 bullets 19 of which struck his body because the police mistook his wallet for a gun leading to a controversy exposes issues of police brutality, racial profiling, and contagious shooting of African-American men by police 2006 Sean Bell took 50 shots Exploding through bones and claiming life Back riddled with bullets Spilling blood into car seats and front porches where brothers once gathered now lies candles and yellow caution tape Bodies outlined in white chalk mixed with tears and tensions risings Reminds me of an old gospel song the elders used to sing A Charge To Keep I have A God To Glorify A never-dying soul to save And fit it for the sky Across the distant waters The crimes still haven’t stopped How do we rectify To serve and protect When there are no dogs to keep dirty cops at bay When police bullets spray from discriminating guns Leaving mothers to mourn their sons with no justice No Peace Jail them, drug them, or kill them seems to be the message Made up stories dressed in blue uniforms and silver shields The long arm of justice must not be silenced with night sticks and billy clubs It is not alright to misuse your position then reposition the truth Resisting arrest tales for situations never warranting arrest in the first place Gray situations placed in the hands of shady police with all too predictable outcomes Police killed at least 102 unarmed black people in 2015, nearly twice each week Mike Brown, Sandra Bland, Dontre Hamilton, John Crawford, Eric Garner died yelling for the right to breathe, Ezell Ford, Dante Parker, Tanisha Anderson, Akai Gurley, 12-year-old Tamir Rice, Jerame Reid, Tony Robinson, Phillip White, Eric Harris, Walter Scott, Freddie Gray still ain’t found justice, Alton Sterling shot while penned to the ground We watched Philando Castile bleed to death Yet, we must trust in the justice system that says “just us”, not them Decipher the criminals from the victims when the same crimes are committed Our protests have gone unanswered I am forced to remind you that Black Lives Matter because the posters of us the Miami police department uses for target practice seems to have some confused I must remind you that our sons, daughters, mothers and father’s are no different from yours That there is a thousand futures being slaughtered by the same that have sworn to serve and protect them I must remind you that Black Lives Matter just as much as the rest
