As I walked into work this morning the news was broadcasting the Trayvon Martin Case. They were debating if George Zimmerman killed Trayvon Martin in self-defense or was it 2nd degree murder. The panel of 5 were each pleading their case. There is no doubt in my mind that George Zimmerman saw Trayvon Martin, profiled him as “black while walking”, and made up in his mind that he was going to shoot him. And that is exactly what he did. Several times the dispatcher informed him not to follow Trayvon, he continued. Why not premeditated murder? How much time do you need to meditate on murdering someone before it can be defined as such? Why not 1st Degree murder? Zimmerman is a liar and a murderer. As my great-grandmother would always tell me, the two go hand in hand. There’s an old saying. If you lie you’ll cheat, if you cheat you’ll steal, if you steal you’ll kill. Zimmerman is guilty of it all.
Trayvon’s mother summed it up rather well. “[I]f this adult had remained in his vehicle, like the police dispatcher advised him to do, then this situation could have been avoided. He chose to follow my son. He chose to pursue my son. He chose to confront my son. And the result is my son’s death. I believe the responsibility lies on him as an adult because my son was not following him. He did not confront him. He did not chase him. And he did not have a weapon.” Sybrina Fulton
Is race a factor in this case? Hell yes it is. “What if Trayvon was a little black boy and he shot an adult man and the man didn’t have a gun? What would have happened to Trayvon? Would he be arrested?,” We that marched, protested, tweeted, Facebooked, lit candles and wore hoodies know that without all of our collective action, Zimmerman would be walking around free and would have never seen the inside of a courtroom. If the shoe was on the other foot, Trayvon would have been in jail from that night forth, fighting to prove his innocence.
RIP Trayvon, your death was not in vain. Because of you, the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), a shadowy, corporate-funded group was further publicly exposed. The group has now disbanded a lot of their issues. Your death sparked a passionate fighting spirit in youth across the globe. Celebrities and Sports Professionals put down their egos and became activists for you. They used their platforms to bridge the gap between activism and entertainment.
As for George Zimmerman, he will surely get what he has coming.
